YouTube is set to update its policies to crack down on creators profiting from “inauthentic” content, specifically targeting mass-produced and repetitive videos that have been facilitated by AI technology.
### New Guidelines
On July 15, the platform will introduce more detailed guidelines within its YouTube Partner Program (YPP) Monetization policies. These guidelines will clarify which types of content can be monetized by creators and which cannot.
### Clamping Down on AI Slop
The update aims to help creators understand what constitutes “inauthentic” content in today’s landscape. While some creators were worried about the impact on certain video types, YouTube assures that the update is a minor one focused on identifying mass-produced or repetitive content, which has long been ineligible for monetization due to viewer perception of spam.
### The Rise of AI Technology
The proliferation of AI technology has led to an influx of low-quality content on YouTube, known as AI slop. This includes AI-generated music channels with millions of subscribers and fake news videos created using generative AI tools. Even true crime series and deepfake phishing scams have emerged, highlighting the need for clearer policies to combat such content.
As YouTube moves to enforce stricter regulations, the platform aims to safeguard its reputation and value by cracking down on AI slop creators within the YPP.
