Google has announced a new AI-powered search tool called Flight Deals to assist travelers in finding affordable flight options. This new tool, integrated into Google Flights, is designed to cater to “flexible travelers” looking for cheaper fares. Users can input natural language queries describing their travel preferences, and the AI system will present matching flight options.
AI-Powered Flight Deals
Flight Deals utilizes a custom version of Gemini 2.5 and obtains pricing information from real-time data feeds with airlines and other travel companies. The tool ranks results based on the percentage of savings, with the highest savings displayed first. If savings percentages are equal, the lower absolute price is prioritized. Deals without savings badges are ranked by the lowest price.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Expansion
Despite Google’s innovative approach, regulators are investigating potential antitrust concerns regarding Google’s dominance in travel discovery. In response, Google is planning to propose changes to address these concerns, including the addition of a price-comparison box in search results.
Initially launched in beta, Flight Deals will roll out in the U.S., Canada, and India, with the aim of gathering feedback to improve travel planning using AI technology. Users have the option to manage or delete their search history created through the tool by visiting MyActivity.
Competition and Future Outlook
Google’s foray into AI-powered flight deals comes as competitors like Booking.com, Expedia, and MakeMyTrip have already integrated AI into their platforms. Despite entering the market later, Google’s scale and reach could pose a significant challenge if the tool proves effective and gains traction.
While Google continues to enhance its services with AI technology, the classic Google Flights interface remains available. The original flight search tool, launched in 2011, is receiving updates, including an option to exclude basic economy fares for trips within the U.S. and Canada.
