Amazon is currently testing short-form AI-powered audio product summaries on select product pages, as announced by the company. These audio summaries are narrated by what Amazon refers to as “AI-powered shopping experts,” who cover key product features, customer reviews, and information sourced from various sources.

To access these new AI product summaries, users can simply tap the “Hear the highlights” button within the Amazon Shopping app. Amazon is initially testing this feature on products that typically require careful consideration before purchase, with the goal of helping customers save time and receive essential information in a conversational, discussion-style format.

This innovative feature aims to make product research more enjoyable and convenient for Amazon customers, providing a helpful and informative shopping experience akin to having friends discuss potential purchases. Currently available on select products for certain U.S. customers, Amazon plans to expand this feature to more products and additional U.S. customers in the near future.

Utilizing large language models (LLMs), the feature generates scripts by extracting content from customer reviews and web information, which are then transformed into short-form audio clips. Amazon highlights this new feature as part of its suite of AI-powered shopping features, which includes Rufus, a generative AI shopping assistant, and Interests, an AI feature that tracks new products matching user interests.

Other tech giants are also leveraging short-form AI-powered audio for quick and efficient information delivery. For instance, Google introduced Audio Overviews through its NotebookLM last year, allowing users to generate podcasts with AI virtual hosts based on shared documents, such as course readings or legal briefs.
