WhatsApp is set to start displaying ads on its chat app, specifically on the Status screen, similar to Instagram’s Stories.

The company will use signals like users’ location, language, and preferences to show targeted ads, without using personally identifiable data.

WhatsApp will allow companies and users to promote Channels and offer subscription-based exclusive updates. Meta mentioned that Status and Channels have over 1.5 billion daily users.

WhatsApp has previously generated revenue from its business platform and click-to-WhatsApp ads, with Meta highlighting these as growing revenue streams.

Alice Newton-Rex, VP of product at WhatsApp, stated that the introduction of ads was a natural evolution to help users discover businesses directly within the app.

WhatsApp plans to roll out ads and new features globally in the upcoming months.
