After acquiring universal messaging apps Beeper and Texts.com, Automattic, the owner of WordPress.com, has now added relationship-management app Clay to its portfolio. The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, but Clay had already secured over $9 million in venture capital funding from investors like General Catalyst and Forerunner Ventures. This tool will continue to be supported and eventually integrated with other Automattic products, such as Beeper.
### The Smarter Address Book
Clay’s software, launched in 2021, acts as a smarter address book or personal CRM. It allows users to organize their contacts and stay up-to-date with their latest updates by pulling in data from various services like LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp, and more. Users can add notes to entries, track interactions, and leverage an AI helper named Nexus to ask questions about their network.
### Joining Forces
As part of the acquisition, Clay’s team, including co-founders Zachary Hamed and Matthew Achariam, will join Automattic’s Other Bets Division, which also includes Beeper and Gravatar. The shared mission of helping with relationships and increasing conscientiousness drives Clay’s features and reinforces its purpose as a comprehensive relationship management platform.
### Integration and Future Plans
Automattic sees the potential for integrating Clay into its ecosystem, particularly with Beeper, to create an identity layer for various tools. Clay’s founders share a similar mission with Automattic and are excited about the longevity and continued development of their app within the company. They aim to integrate with other open technologies in the future and expand their reach beyond individual companies.
Clay’s user base remains undisclosed, but the app manages over 150 million relationships and is available across multiple platforms. While the long-term plan involves integration with Beeper, specific details and timelines are yet to be finalized. As of now, Clay’s pricing remains on a freemium model, with paid plans starting at $10 per month for individuals and $40 per seat per month for teams.
