Creator platform Patreon must update its app to comply with Apple’s guidelines following a recent change that enabled U.S. users to make purchases via the web.

### Apple’s Instruction

Patreon’s own web-based checkout option is now the default for U.S. fans. However, the company needs to ensure that this checkout option opens in an external browser as per Apple’s instruction. This adjustment results in additional steps for fans wanting to pay through Patreon directly, but it allows the company to avoid paying Apple a 30% commission on in-app purchases.

### Background

Following a court ruling in the Apple-Epic legal battle, Apple was required to support external payments in apps on its U.S. App Store without charging commissions. In response, the Patreon iOS app (version 125.5.0) introduced an option for users to pay via the web using various payment methods. These options initially appeared within an in-app browser but now open in an external browser based on Apple’s feedback.

### Supporting Creators

Creators using older billing models can continue to accept payments through Patreon’s iOS app. This update expands the billing options available to creators on legacy billing models, allowing them to receive payments through the app.

Patreon has successfully negotiated with Apple to extend the deadline for switching creators to subscription billing, providing more flexibility for creators to make the transition at their own pace.
