AI chatbots packaged inside cute plushies are being marketed as a potential alternative to screen time for kids. However, The New York Times’ Amanda Hess has some reservations about these AI-powered kiddie companions. She recounts a demonstration with Grem, a product from startup Curio, and expresses concerns about the chatbot becoming a replacement for human interaction rather than an upgrade to a traditional teddy bear.
Hess argues that while these talking toys may keep children away from screens, they also convey the message that the ultimate source of curiosity and entertainment lies within their phones. Despite her initial reluctance, she eventually allowed her kids to play with Grem after removing the voice box. They interacted with the plushie and played games with it before moving on to watching TV.
