Apple’s iPhone and other operating systems have received a design overhaul with the introduction of Liquid Glass at WWDC 2025. This new user interface features shiny, reflective, and transparent elements that give the software a sleek and modern look.
The Evolution of Design
The Liquid Glass design is inspired by Apple’s VR headset, the Vision Pro, and aims to unify the design language across all of Apple’s devices. This update represents the biggest visual change to iOS since the transition from skeuomorphic design to flat design in iOS 7.
Optical Qualities of Glass
According to Apple’s vice president of design, Alan Dye, the Liquid Glass interface incorporates the optical qualities of glass and a fluidity unique to Apple. This update aims to enhance clarity in navigation and controls, while also creating a dynamic and interactive user experience.
Expanding to Other Devices
The Liquid Glass design will not be limited to iOS 26 on the iPhone. It will also be extended to iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. Developers will have the opportunity to leverage Liquid Glass materials in their apps using SwiftUI, UIKit, and AppKit, along with new APIs.
Overall, Apple’s Liquid Glass interface represents a significant shift in design philosophy, offering a more immersive and visually engaging experience for users across all of its operating systems.
