Apple has just announced some major updates to Spotlight, the Mac’s search feature, during WWDC 2025. In macOS Tahoe, Spotlight is now more powerful than ever, allowing users to run shortcuts and perform various actions like writing emails, setting reminders, and playing podcasts.

With the rise in popularity of chat applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, Apple is upgrading Spotlight to keep up with the trend of using command line interfaces for tasks. The visual redesign of Spotlight makes it easier for users to navigate through apps, files, clipboard history, and more, all intelligently ranked based on relevance.

One of the new features introduced is quick keys, which allow users to access specific apps or actions with short strings of characters. Developers can also make their apps discoverable in Spotlight using the App Intents API.
