While U.S.-based companies are sending more payloads into orbit, the limitations of conventional rockets are becoming evident. Most of the weight in rockets is in the propellant, not the payload, with a significant portion used to battle Earth’s gravity and atmosphere.

Auriga Space, a California-based startup, is revolutionizing the launch industry by developing an electromagnetic launch track powered by electricity. This track accelerates a small rocket to over six times the speed of sound, exiting at hypersonic speed with a reusable ground-based architecture, ultimately aiming to increase launch efficiency and frequency.

The company has raised $12.2 million in funding, with European firm OTB Ventures leading the latest round. The technology, inspired by electromagnetic launchers like rail guns and maglevs, is now viable due to advancements in power electronics.

The Future of Space Launch

Auriga’s founder, Winnie Lai, envisions a future where space launch is more efficient, cost-effective, and frequent. The company’s innovative approach challenges traditional rocket launches and aims to provide a solution for the demand for responsive launch capabilities.

Revolutionizing Hypersonic Testing

Auriga plans to introduce hypersonic ground testing with projects like Prometheus and Thor, addressing the need for affordable and on-demand test infrastructure. These initiatives will allow customers to conduct multiple tests under various conditions at a lower cost and higher frequency than currently available.

The company is also working to meet the demand for responsive launch from the U.S. Space Force, aiming to reduce launch notice times from hours to minutes. With a focus on efficiency and innovation, Auriga Space is poised to change the landscape of space exploration.
