Around this time last year, Cameo faced a significant downturn with a drastic drop in valuation and financial struggles, including the inability to pay a hefty fine to the FTC.
Now, the company is trying to revitalize itself by launching Candl, a birthday planning app targeting forgetful users who want to ensure they never miss celebrating their friends’ birthdays. The app syncs birthdays from saved contacts, creates a birthday calendar, and provides reminders for upcoming celebrations. It even offers astrology insights for compatibility based on zodiac signs.
Candl also features a “Birthday Network” to share birthday information among users and plans to incorporate an AI-powered gift idea suggestion feature.
Despite its potential usefulness, some find it odd that a once-prominent company like Cameo would release such a simple app in an attempt to regain popularity.
Although Cameo has undertaken more ambitious projects in the past, it seems that its efforts, including NFT-based offerings and content creator initiatives, have yet to yield the desired results.
Data from app intelligence firm Appfigures shows a decline in Cameo app downloads since the peak of the pandemic, with global consumer spending on the app also decreasing significantly.
As Candl enters the market, only time will tell if it will be successful in gaining traction among users.
