The company behind Cursor, the popular AI coding editor, has introduced a new web app that enables users to oversee a network of coding agents directly from their browser.
### Expanding Beyond the IDE
Cursor’s latest release signifies a significant advancement beyond its integrated development environment (IDE), which developers rely on to access its tools. Initially offering only an AI-powered IDE, Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, has been working diligently to broaden its product reach and create more agent-powered experiences for users.
### Features of the Web App
With the new web app, Cursor users can now issue natural language requests through their browser, whether on desktop or mobile, to assign tasks to background agents. These tasks may include writing features or resolving bugs in their codebase. Additionally, the web app allows users to monitor agents’ progress on various tasks, view completed changes, and merge them into the codebase.
### Growth and Plans for the Future
Andrew Milich, Cursor’s head of product engineering, highlights that the Slack integration and web app are part of an initiative to streamline the user experience. Recent data from Anysphere reveals that Cursor has surpassed $500 million in annualized recurring revenue, with over half of Fortune 500 companies, such as Nvidia, Uber, and Adobe, utilizing the platform.
To capitalize on this growth, Anysphere has launched a new $200-per-month Pro tier for Cursor users. The company aims to continue enhancing its offerings and expanding its user base.
Cursor’s background agents aim to assist users in initiating tasks through Slack or the web app. If an agent is unable to complete a task, users can seamlessly transition to the IDE and continue where the agent left off. Each agent also has a unique shareable link for easy tracking of progress and code changes made by team members.
Anysphere confirms that all customers with access to background agents can utilize the Cursor web app, including subscribers to the Pro plan and higher tiers, excluding users on the free tier.
### Advancing AI Technology
While Cursor is not the first to introduce AI coding agents, the company emphasizes its commitment to delivering practical solutions rather than “demo-ware” that fails in practice. As AI reasoning models progress, Cursor’s team believes that coding agents will play a significant role in software development, with CEO Michael Truell foreseeing them handling at least 20% of a software engineer’s tasks by 2026.
