President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Elon Musk will co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, which is Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency acronym. Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, and owner of X, Neuralink, and The Boring Company, will work alongside biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to streamline government operations. Their aim is to reduce bureaucracy, cut regulations, trim unnecessary expenses, and restructure federal agencies.
DOGE will serve as an advisory body outside the government, collaborating with the White House and Office of Management & Budget. The initiative is expected to wrap up by July 4, 2026. Musk had been advocating for a Department of Government Efficiency while campaigning for Trump, pledging significant cuts to federal agencies if Trump won the election.
The relationship between Trump and Musk has grown stronger in recent months, with Musk donating over $100 million to a pro-Trump super PAC and hosting rallies for Trump during his presidential run. Trump promised Musk the role at DOGE during an event in New York. The specifics of which agencies will face cuts and how the initiative will progress remain to be seen.
Please note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated Elon Musk’s title at Neuralink.
