The European Union is not backing down on its plan to implement groundbreaking AI legislation, despite pushback from over a hundred tech companies. Big names like Alphabet, Meta, Mistral AI, and ASML have been trying to delay the EU’s AI rules, arguing that it will put Europe at a disadvantage in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
No Backtracking Allowed
“I’ve heard all the fuss about the AI Act, but let me make this crystal clear – there’s no slowing down, no breaks, no pauses,” said European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier. The AI Act introduces a risk-based approach to regulating artificial intelligence, prohibiting certain high-risk applications like cognitive behavioral manipulation and social scoring. It also sets guidelines for other “limited risk” AI applications, such as chatbots.
What’s the Plan?
Developers looking to access the EU market will need to register their AI systems and adhere to risk and quality management requirements. The EU began rolling out the AI Act last year, and the full set of rules is expected to be in place by mid-2026. So, it looks like the EU is determined to stay on track with its AI legislation, regardless of the tech industry’s concerns.
