The European Union is in the process of developing compliance guidelines for its new AI law. As part of this initiative, the EU has initiated a consultation to gather feedback in two key areas.

### Defining AI systems
One of the areas of focus is on how the law defines AI systems in comparison to “simpler traditional” software. The EU is seeking input from individuals in the AI industry, businesses, academia, and civil society on the clarity of key elements of the Act’s definition. Additionally, they are asking for examples of software that should be considered out of scope.

### Banned uses of AI
The Act includes a list of prohibited use cases due to the perceived “unacceptable risk,” such as China-style social scoring. The majority of the consultation is dedicated to this topic. The EU is looking for detailed feedback on each banned use case, with a particular interest in practical examples.

The consultation period will run until December 11, 2024. Following this, the Commission plans to release guidance on defining AI systems and banned uses in early 2025, as stated in a press release.
