TikTok Launches Footnotes Fact-Checking System
TikTok has announced the public launch of Footnotes, a new crowdsourced fact-checking system similar to those of X and Meta. This feature will be available to U.S. users as a pilot program, allowing contributors to write and rate Footnotes on TikTok videos. Users can view and submit ratings for helpful notes, enhancing the community’s understanding of content on the platform.
Tech Giants Embrace Fact-Checking
Community Notes-style features have been around for years, with Twitter pioneering Birdwatch in 2020. The concept has since evolved under Elon Musk’s ownership into Twitter’s Community Notes, inspiring similar systems at other social media companies. Meta dropped fact-checking in favor of its own Community Notes system in the U.S., while YouTube launched its own Notes feature last year. Despite these developments, TikTok’s Footnotes initiative aims to complement its existing Global Fact-checking Program, collaborating with over 20 accredited fact-checking organizations worldwide.
