Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, is now making its way into your inbox with the introduction of email summary cards that will be displayed at the top of your emails. Users no longer need to manually select an option to summarize an email with AI, as the AI will now automatically provide a summary as needed, without requiring any user interaction.

When Gemini was first launched in the side panel of Gmail last year, one of its features allowed users to summarize lengthy email threads, along with other tools such as drafting email messages and viewing suggested responses. Now, Google is integrating the AI into your inbox, whether you want to use it or not.

The update showcases how AI is increasingly becoming a part of the software and services that people use daily, despite the fact that AI summaries may not always be accurate. For example, Apple experienced issues with AI summaries for app push notifications, with the BBC finding that the feature frequently made mistakes when summarizing news headlines, leading Apple to temporarily pause AI summaries for news apps.

With the new email summary cards, Gemini will highlight the key points of longer emails and continuously update the synopsis as replies come in. The feature does not replace the manual option to summarize an email, as users can still access this feature via a button at the top of the email or in Gmail’s Gemini side panel.

The email summary cards feature is currently only available for English-language emails and may be enabled or disabled by default based on the user’s region. Users can choose to turn on or off the feature in Gmail’s Settings under “Smart features,” while workplace admins also have the option to disable personalization settings for users from the Admin console.
