At the TechCrunch Disrupt event, GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra discussed the political implications of vehicle propulsion and the company’s approach to the future of electric and autonomous vehicles.

Cruise will still help GM transform the industry

Barra highlighted the importance of autonomy in transforming the automotive industry. GM’s acquisition of Cruise in 2016 allowed the AV startup to develop independently, leading to the commercialization of a driverless robotaxi. Despite some setbacks, Barra remains optimistic about the potential of autonomous vehicles to enhance safety and sees Cruise as a key player in GM’s future autonomous vehicle offerings.

GM will someday make a purpose-built AV

Following a safety incident, GM revised its plans for a purpose-built autonomous vehicle without traditional controls. Barra acknowledged the challenges posed by safety standards but remains committed to developing AV technology that prioritizes safety and innovation.
