Google is ramping up its AI development efforts by restructuring its teams. The AI Studio team and the team behind Google’s Gemini models will now be under Google DeepMind, the AI R&D division responsible for many of Google’s recent innovations.
The Move to Google DeepMind
The move aims to enhance collaboration and accelerate research to developer pipeline. Engineer Jaana Dogan mentioned that this reshuffling will make DeepMind’s work more publicly available than ever before, with better APIs, more open source projects, and additional tools on the horizon.
Google’s Focus on AI Development
This shift follows Google’s previous move of the team behind the Gemini-powered chatbot to DeepMind. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the importance of increasing the pace of progress in AI development, particularly with the Gemini chatbot showing strong momentum. The company is focused on scaling Gemini on the consumer side in 2025, aiming to establish a leadership position in the market.
The Urgency of the Moment
Pichai highlighted the need for Google to move faster as a company, recognizing the high stakes in AI development. With a focus on closing the gap and establishing a leading position in the industry, Google is prioritizing the advancement of its AI capabilities.
