Google Labs, the wacky experimental branch of the tech giant, has dropped a new online project that adds a fun twist to the classic game of chess.
GenChess is the name of the game, and it uses Gemini Imagen 3, Google’s image-generation model, to let players customize their own chess pieces through text prompts.
### Get Creative with GenChess
To get started, just log in with your Gmail account, hit the “Generate” button, and type in your desired theme for your chess set – whether you’re feeling sushi vibes or craving a pizza-inspired set.
### Classic or Creative?
You can choose between classic or creative styles for your chess set. The classic version sticks to the traditional look, while the creative one gets abstract. After the model spits out a full set, you can tweak individual pieces. So, if your king isn’t up to par, toss in some extra text prompts to level up its appearance.
### Battle Ready
Once you’re happy with your custom chess set, you can summon an opponent to face off against. Google paired our sushi-themed set with a bot sporting a taco-inspired set. You can pick from three difficulty levels and two timer options for some added challenge.

Google’s latest web experiment is a fun and functional mashup of AI, design, and chess. They aimed to make it accessible for everyone to play around with image generation.
As part of the GenChess launch, Google also announced some chess-related initiatives tied to the World Chess Championship kickoff. One exciting highlight is their partnership with the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to host a coding challenge on Kaggle. Data scientists and machine learning buffs can flex their skills by creating AI chess engines.
Exciting news – the Chess Gem game for Gemini is set to debut next month! This new feature in the Gemini app will let players engage in chess games against a language model and enjoy some friendly banter. Keep in mind, though, this gem is exclusively for Gemini Advanced subscribers.
