Google is making significant investments in renewable energy, with the recent acquisition of another 600 megawatts of solar power to fuel its data centers. This new deal with EnergyRe in South Carolina is part of Google’s commitment to eliminate its carbon footprint from energy by 2030.
Renewable Energy Investments in Tech Industry
Google’s push for renewable energy is part of a larger trend in the tech industry. Last year, the company pledged $20 billion to build zero-carbon power plants with Intersect Power and TPG Rise Climate. Additionally, Google signed a contract for over 700 megawatts of solar projects in Oklahoma earlier this year.
Challenges and Solutions
The growth of AI and the increasing compute power required to run it have presented challenges in achieving carbon neutrality. Despite this, Google and other tech giants like Microsoft and Meta are ramping up their investments in solar power. Microsoft added hundreds of megawatts of solar power this year, while Meta signed deals for large-scale solar projects in January and February.
