Google announced during Google I/O 2025 the rebranding of Project Starline, its teleconferencing platform focused on corporations that utilizes 3D imaging. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to launching this platform later in the year.
Integration with Popular Services
Previously known as Starline, Google Beam will be available to “early customers” like Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, and Duolingo in 2025 through Google’s partnership with HP. Upon launch, Beam will be compatible with Google Meet and other well-known video conferencing services, including Zoom.
Immersive Experience and Features
Beam combines software and hardware components, such as a six-camera array and a custom light field display, to enable users to interact with others as if they were in the same physical space. An AI model translates video footage from the cameras, which capture images from various angles, into a 3D representation. Google asserts that Beam offers precise millimeter-level head tracking and 60-frames-per-second video streaming. Additionally, the platform boasts an AI-powered real-time speech translation feature that preserves the original speaker’s voice, tone, and expressions.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai described Beam as providing a natural and deeply immersive conversational experience, emphasizing its innovative capabilities.
Market Demand Considerations
Despite the shift back to in-office work environments post-pandemic, some businesses may still find value in Beam for virtual office-to-office conferences. In 2023, Google reported that approximately 100 companies, including WeWork and T-Mobile, were testing prototype versions of the technology.
Google has indicated collaborations with channel partners like Diversified and AVI-SPL, as well as Zoom, to facilitate the global distribution of Beam to organizations worldwide.
Overall, the introduction of Beam represents a significant advancement in teleconferencing technology, offering a unique and immersive communication experience for users in various industries.
