Confession time: My household owns two cars, one with leather and one with “leather.” The former feels amazing, the latter … well, let’s just say it’s not fooling anyone.
Most fake leathers are made using plastics derived from fossil fuels. But Uncaged Innovations is changing the game with leather alternatives made mostly from grains like wheat, soy, and corn. The result? A material that feels and even smells like real animal leather.
Hyundai Collaboration
Uncaged is now partnering with Hyundai’s Cradle division to fine-tune their material for automotive use. The goal is to create a durable, eco-friendly material that can replace leather in cars and trucks. The best part? This material has a carbon footprint 95% lower than traditional leather.
Quality and Cost
The startup’s materials are currently used in vegan-friendly handbags and watch straps. Automakers are a big target, as each leather interior can consume up to 14 cowhides, resulting in a lot of waste. Uncaged’s material is consistent, cost-effective, and saves the environment.
Compared to traditional leather, Uncaged’s product is affordable, making it a smart choice for automakers looking to go green. Downs, the co-founder, mentions that they are running tests for a range of automakers, with heat resistance being the main challenge. But they are making progress and getting closer to simulating real leather.
Innovative Process
Uncaged’s material mimics the chemical structure of leather itself, resulting from tanning animal hides to stabilize collagen proteins. By using plant proteins and bio-based polyurethane, they create a biodegradable material with various textures, colors, and even scents.
From automotive companies developing their signature scent to handbag manufacturers requesting custom fragrances, Uncaged’s plant-based leather is revolutionizing the industry. The future of sustainable, animal-friendly materials is here – and it smells amazing.
