Joby Aviation has recently doubled the size and production capacity of its pilot manufacturing facility located in Marina, California. This expansion is a crucial step as the company aims to commercialize eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles) by early next year.
Facility Enhancements
The facility now spans 435,500 square feet and has the capability to produce 24 aircraft per year. Once fully operational, Joby anticipates being able to produce “nearly one” aircraft every other week. Additionally, the facility will support activities such as federal certification, ground and flight testing, pilot training, and aircraft maintenance.
Collaboration with Toyota
To facilitate the development of both the Marina and Dayton facilities, Joby has engaged engineers from Toyota, one of its key investors. In May, Toyota closed the first $250 million tranche of a $500 million investment in Joby. This collaboration is expected to bolster the company’s manufacturing capabilities and expedite the production process.
Future Plans
Joby recently added a sixth aircraft to its fleet, which quickly obtained airworthiness certification upon completion. The company, which went public through a SPAC merger in 2021, is gearing up to launch commercial operations starting in Dubai by early 2026, followed by expansion into a U.S. city.
Overall, Joby Aviation’s efforts to enhance its manufacturing facilities and expand its fleet signal its commitment to revolutionizing urban air mobility through innovative eVTOL technology.
