Lyft recently revealed its intention to introduce autonomous shuttles developed by Austrian manufacturer Benteler Group to its network by late 2026. These shuttles will be utilized in collaboration with U.S. cities and airports, with potential expansion beyond these initial locations.
Partnership with Benteler Group
The collaboration with Benteler Group’s mobility division, under the Holon brand, will enable Lyft to utilize urban electric shuttles equipped with innovative features. These shuttles, designed for up to nine seated and six standing passengers, are devoid of traditional steering wheels and pedals, featuring inward-facing seats for a unique travel experience.
Competition with Uber
This announcement coincides with Uber’s recent strides in the autonomous vehicle sector, with partnerships established with various companies such as Waymo, WeRide, Baidu, Pony AI, and others. Despite ongoing testing efforts, Lyft is still in the process of integrating autonomous vehicles into its fleet. The company is set to introduce AVs from May Mobility in Atlanta, while also collaborating with autonomy provider Mobileye for future endeavors.
Lyft’s decision to incorporate autonomous shuttles aligns with the evolving landscape of transportation, as companies strive to integrate cutting-edge technologies for enhanced efficiency and convenience.
