AI startup Mistral recently unveiled a new AI model aimed at coding: Devstral. Developed in collaboration with AI company All Hands AI, Devstral is now accessible under an Apache 2.0 license, allowing for unrestricted commercial use. According to Mistral, Devstral surpasses other open models like Google’s Gemma 3 27B and DeepSeek’s V3 on SWE-Bench Verified, a benchmark for coding skills. The company claims that Devstral excels in exploring codebases, editing multiple files, and empowering software engineering agents.

AI Coding Assistants on the Rise

As AI coding assistants gain popularity, Mistral’s Devstral joins the fray. With companies like JetBrains, Google, Windsurf, and OpenAI also unveiling AI models optimized for programming tasks, the promise of increased coding productivity continues to drive their adoption. Despite the potential for boosting efficiency, AI models still face challenges in producing quality software due to security vulnerabilities and errors resulting from weaknesses in understanding programming logic.

Devstral’s Features and Availability

Mistral’s previous venture into assistive programming was Codestral, a generative code model restricted for internal use only. In contrast, Devstral is available for download on AI development platforms, such as Hugging Face, and accessible through Mistral’s API. Priced at $0.1 per million input tokens and $0.3 per million output tokens, Devstral is positioned as a “research preview” in the AI coding landscape. The model, with 24 billion parameters, is on the smaller side, with plans to release a larger agentic coding model in the near future.

Mistral’s Vision and Success

Established in 2023, Mistral is a cutting-edge model lab focused on developing AI-powered services like the chatbot platform Le Chat and mobile apps. With backing from VCs like General Catalyst and over €1.1 billion in funding to date, Mistral serves clients including BNP Paribas, AXA, and Mirakl. Devstral marks Mistral’s third product launch this month, following the release of Mistral Medium 3 and Le Chat Enterprise, emphasizing efficiency and corporate-focused features in their AI offerings.
