The world’s leading chipmaker, Nvidia, is showing strong determination to maintain China as a crucial growth market. According to Reuters, the company is working on a new AI chip, codenamed B30A, specifically for sale in China. This chip is reported to be half as powerful as Nvidia’s flagship B300 Blackwell GPU.
The B30A chip is said to be more powerful than the H20 GPUs currently permitted for sale in China. Although it will have a single-die design, unlike the dual-die design of the B300 GPUs, it will still offer features such as fast data transmission, support for NVLink, and high-bandwidth memory.
Nvidia’s development of the B30A chip appears to be separate from another chip intended for the Chinese market. The company emphasized that all products are evaluated for their roadmap to compete within the boundaries set by governments, with full approval from relevant authorities. However, uncertainties remain regarding approvals for the new chip.
Amidst geopolitical tensions between the US and China over AI development, Nvidia and its industry counterparts argue that maintaining a presence in China is crucial. They believe that relinquishing the Chinese market to competitors like Huawei would be a significant loss. The Trump administration recently eased restrictions on exporting high-performance AI chips to China, reflecting the delicate balance between technological advancement and political considerations.
