Creator subscription platform Patreon is now offering gift subscriptions just in time for the holiday season. This new feature allows fans to easily support their favorite creators by giving them a subscription as a gift. In addition, creators can now offer discounts for membership sign-ups.

Increased Support During the Holidays

Patreon has found that creators typically see a significant increase in paid membership sign-ups between November and January. With the introduction of gift subscriptions, this bump in support could become even more substantial. Fans can now gift Patreon subscriptions as holiday presents, providing exclusive access to bonus content like extra podcast episodes, livestreams, or digital downloads. For example, a creator who posts cooking videos may share additional recipes behind the paywall.

Converting Fans to Paid Members

Last year, Patreon launched free memberships, allowing users to subscribe to a creator’s non-paywalled updates similar to an email newsletter. With 30 million new free memberships created over the summer, creators can now create gift links for fans to redeem. This feature helps convert fans to paying members after the free period ends.

Similar to Streamer Culture

In the world of streamers, fans often contribute gift subscriptions to fellow viewers. While Patreon gift subscriptions may not have the same spontaneity as Twitch creator livestreams, they offer a similar way to support creators. This feature could be compared to sending a loved one an Amazon gift card, showcasing the popularity of creators among younger audiences.
