For the past 18 months, Rivian and Google engineers have been working together on a new project that is now being unveiled. Rivian is rolling out a software update that will introduce a customized version of Google Maps into its electric vehicles. This move is part of Rivian’s ongoing efforts to set its vehicles apart through software innovation, a strategy that has led to a partnership with Volkswagen.

Unique to this collaboration is the integration of Google Maps into Rivian’s in-car navigation system, with a touch of Rivian’s signature features such as trip planner, user interface, design, and EV charger locations. This partnership differs from Google’s other automotive ventures, like Android Auto and Android Automotive, by providing a more tailored and integrated experience for Rivian customers.

Rivian’s goal was to create a new navigation product that goes beyond the standard Google Maps application. By working closely with Google to achieve a more open integration at the API level, Rivian has successfully enhanced its navigation system with features like estimated time of arrival, traffic updates, satellite imagery, and points of interest.

The updated Google-based maps, which include features like EV range estimates and charging stop selection, will be available through a software update in Rivian vehicles and its mobile app starting today. The mobile app will also offer additional trip planning features, such as place photos, descriptions, satellite view, traffic incidents, and the ability to share destinations with the vehicle.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Rivian as it continues to innovate and enhance the driving experience for its customers.
