Chinese fast-fashion platform Shein has relaunched in India through a partnership with local conglomerate Reliance’s retail chain, nearly five years after being banned amid diplomatic tensions. The new Shein India Fast Fashion app, developed by Reliance Retail, allows Reliance to have full control over operations and data while Shein operates as a technology partner. The deal includes storage of all customer data in India and no access rights for Shein. This partnership marks a change in Reliance’s strategy and aims to strengthen its presence in e-commerce in India.
Shein is currently offering delivery in select cities and plans to expand nationwide soon. Products are designed and manufactured in India with prices starting at 199 rupees. The deal with Shein is a rare exception to India’s ban on Chinese apps, with Shein agreeing to oversight measures to secure approval. The partnership aims to boost India’s textile manufacturing sector while maintaining strict data sovereignty standards.
