Signal announced today that it is updating its Windows app to prevent the system from capturing screenshots, aiming to protect the displayed content. This new “screen security” setting is now enabled by default on Windows 11, designed to safeguard users’ privacy from Microsoft’s Recall feature, which captures screenshots continuously to track activities. Despite pausing the feature rollout last year, Microsoft has resumed testing it in the Windows Preview Channel, now making it opt-in with the option to pause anytime. However, Signal pointed out that the feature may still capture sensitive content, showing a blank screen when attempting to take a screenshot with the screen security setting enabled. Additionally, some functions like screen readers may not work properly with this setting, which can be disabled through Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen security, with a confirmation prompt to prevent accidental disabling. Signal emphasized the need for AI teams developing systems like Recall to consider privacy implications more carefully, stating that apps like Signal should not have to implement workaround solutions to maintain service privacy and integrity.
