Tesla has taken legal action against a former engineer, accusing him of stealing trade secrets from its humanoid robotics program, Optimus, to start a competing startup. The lawsuit alleges that Zhongjie “Jay” Li downloaded confidential information about Optimus on his personal smartphones while working at Tesla from August 2022 to September 2024. Shortly after leaving Tesla, Li founded Proception, a company backed by Y Combinator, which claimed to have developed advanced humanoid robotic hands similar to those he worked on at Tesla.

Proception aims to revolutionize human-robot interaction by creating the world’s most advanced humanoid hands. Tesla’s Optimus robotics program, which includes the development of the Tesla Bot, has faced challenges since its announcement in 2021. Despite plans to introduce the robot and other products in 2023, the project has faced delays. Elon Musk announced in July 2024 that Tesla would start selling the robot in 2026, but at a later event in October 2024, the Optimus bots present were mostly controlled by humans remotely.
