According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, the support for banning TikTok among Americans is decreasing. The survey, which included over 5,000 U.S. adults, revealed that only 34% of respondents are in favor of banning the popular short-form video app. This marks a significant drop from the 50% support recorded in a similar study back in 2023.
Support for the ban has also decreased across party lines, with both Republican and Democratic voters showing less support for the ban compared to previous years. Interestingly, individuals who do not use TikTok are more likely to support the ban, with 45% of non-users in favor compared to only 12% of TikTok users.
Despite the decline in popularity of the ban, the future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain. Former President Joe Biden signed the ban into law last April, citing concerns about Chinese surveillance. This legislation gave ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, until January 19 to sell the app to an American company.
As the deadline approached, the app briefly went dark before resuming operations. President Trump then extended the sale deadline to April 19, with American companies like Oracle, Microsoft, and Perplexity AI showing interest in acquiring TikTok. However, ByteDance has not confirmed any plans to sell the app.
