Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Threads, the company’s social network, will start testing a separate DM (direct message) inbox for users, distinct from the Instagram DM Inboxes. This new feature will allow Threads users to chat without the need to switch apps to Instagram.
Initially, the feature will be tested in limited locations such as Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina, with plans for a broader rollout soon. The chat feature will focus on one-on-one conversations rather than group messages.
This development is likely to be well-received by Threads users, as many have different followers on Threads compared to Instagram. Additionally, some Threads users may not frequently use their Instagram accounts.
Instagram has been exploring ways to integrate Threads DMs for some time. Last year, they were working on a prototype to enable users to send messages directly to their Instagram inbox from the Threads app. In 2023, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri expressed hope for the Instagram inbox to function seamlessly with Threads, acknowledging that users have varied followings on different platforms.
Threads initially leveraged Instagram’s network effects upon its launch in July 2023, connecting users with friends and creators. However, over time, it became evident that Threads fostered unique networks due to its public nature, resembling other short-form apps like X and Bluesky.
Meta’s decision to introduce a separate DM inbox responds to the demand from Threads users for streamlined one-on-one conversations. Despite the positive reception, Threads is late to the game, as rival network Bluesky already launched DMs in May 2024. Moreover, Elon Musk’s X recently unveiled new features for XChat, including group messages, vanishing mode, and file sharing, aiming to enhance the DM experience.
