Instagram Threads is rapidly approaching its main competitor X in terms of mobile app users, based on recent data from market intelligence provider Similarweb. In June 2025, Threads’ mobile app for iOS and Android had 115.1 million daily active users, marking a 127.8% year-over-year growth. Meanwhile, X reached 132 million daily actives, with a year-over-year growth decrease of 15.2%.
Bluesky, a decentralized social network, experienced a significant 372.5% year-over-year growth as of June. However, despite this growth, Bluesky’s worldwide daily active users only amount to 4.1 million as of June. Bluesky had a surge in users following the U.S. presidential elections, but some users have returned to Threads amid complaints of Bluesky becoming too politically biased.
The Competition Between Threads and X
Threads and X are currently in a close race on mobile devices, with Threads showing potential to become a significant competitor for X across iOS and Android platforms. Although Threads may attract more ad dollars, which is Meta’s main revenue source for Threads, X still holds an advantage on the web.
X’s worldwide daily web visits are significantly higher than Threads’, with X seeing 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide in June 2025, compared to Threads’ 6.9 million.
Bluesky’s Impact
Bluesky has seen growth in average daily web visits, surpassing Threads in this aspect. The competition intensifies in the U.S. market, where X remains dominant in both web and mobile visits. Bluesky’s long-term success may depend on the appeal of its open social ecosystem rather than short-term user surges based on protests.
Threads and X in the U.S. Market
In the U.S. market, Bluesky surpassed Threads in average daily web visits, but X remained the leader with a significant number of daily visits. On mobile, Threads and X were closer in competition, with X holding a slight edge in U.S. daily active users on iOS and Android.
Threads’ Reach and X’s Private Metrics
Officially, Threads boasts 350 million monthly active users according to Meta’s latest earnings report. X, as a private company, no longer publicly discloses metrics, but Elon Musk previously claimed X had 600 million monthly active users.
