TikTok Introduces New Messaging Features

TikTok announced on Friday that it is rolling out new features for direct messages (DMs), allowing users to send voice notes and share up to nine images or videos in one-to-one and group chats. This move expands TikTok’s capabilities beyond just being an entertainment platform, aiming to enhance user interaction and engagement on the platform.

Voice notes can now be recorded and sent up to 60 seconds long, aligning TikTok with other popular social apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple’s Messages. This addition caters to the growing trend, especially among Gen Z, of using audio messages for communication.

The new photo and video sharing option enables users to select content from their camera roll or capture new media to share with others. To ensure safety, initial message requests cannot include images or videos taken by the sender; only content already on TikTok can be shared. Additionally, reminders about privacy and content recipients are provided when sending media.

Age restrictions are in place for DMs on TikTok, with users under 16 unable to access this feature. For users between 16 and 18, automated systems detect and block images containing nudity to protect both senders and receivers. Users over 18 have the option to enable this safety feature in their settings.

TikTok sees these new features as a way for users to express themselves and connect with others more effectively. The platform has been actively improving its messaging product, introducing group chats and Creator Chat Rooms to enhance user interactions.
