Truecaller is discontinuing its call-recording feature on iOS, just over two years after its launch, to focus on fighting spam calls. The decision comes as the company aims to prioritize its core offering, leaving iPhone users without this feature starting September 30.

Reason for Discontinuation

Truecaller’s head of iOS, Nakul Kabra, explained that the move is to emphasize Live Caller ID and automatic spam-blocking features. Although call recording was initially introduced for paying subscribers in June 2023, it faced challenges on iOS due to Apple’s restrictions on third-party apps recording calls natively.

Transition Support

To assist users during the transition, Truecaller has set up a support page. Those with saved call recordings can download them, share them, or switch to iCloud to access them after the feature is removed. The company’s decision follows Apple’s introduction of native call recording and transcription support for iPhone users.

Impact on Users

Truecaller’s call recording was initially meant to entice iPhone users to upgrade, offering additional features beyond the free tier. With around 3 million subscribers globally, iOS accounts for 44% of the company’s total premium revenue. Despite the discontinuation, paying users still benefit from real-time caller ID, advanced spam blocking, and other features.

As Truecaller shifts its focus, iPhone users will need to adapt to the removal of the call-recording feature and explore alternative options for managing their calls.
