The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed granting Apple’s and Google’s mobile platforms “strategic market status.” This designation would allow the regulator to implement rules that could impact how their app stores operate and how their mobile software functions.
This proposal aims to foster a more open and competitive environment for the app economy and user choice. Apple and Google, however, have raised concerns about the potential changes, with Apple arguing that they could compromise user security and privacy. A final decision on the matter is expected in October, following presentations from both companies.
If approved, the CMA would have the authority to address various issues, such as commission rates on in-app purchases, the app review process, app rankings, developer access to certain technology, and default settings that may hinder competition. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, expressed disappointment with the proposed roadmap, as it does not allow for competing mobile app stores like the Epic Games Store.
