U.S. Senate Overwhelmingly Votes to Remove Ban on State Regulation of AI
Senators in the U.S. voted decisively to eliminate a 10-year ban on states’ ability to regulate AI from the Trump administration’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” according to Axios.
Prominent figures in Silicon Valley supported the removal of the so-called “AI moratorium,” arguing that it would prevent a confusing mix of regulations that could hinder AI progress.
Bipartisan opposition grew against the ban, with concerns that it would give too much power to AI companies and harm consumers. After much debate, Senators Blackburn and Cantwell successfully removed the provision, shortening the proposed ban from 10 years to five.
In the end, the Senate voted 99-1 to get rid of the AI moratorium.
