So, it looks like Waymo’s robotaxi service is hitting the brakes in some cities because of the upcoming “No Kings” protests against President Trump. The protests have caused service limitations in San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix, with LA getting the full shutdown treatment. How long this will last is anyone’s guess.
Last weekend, things got heated in LA with protesters torching five Waymo vehicles and tagging them with anti-ICE messages. The suspension in downtown LA was Waymo’s way of saying, “Hey, maybe let’s cool it for a bit.”
Why the vehicles were targeted isn’t crystal clear, but they could be seen as Big Brother’s little helpers, especially since police have asked for robotaxi footage in the past for their investigations. Waymo, though, isn’t afraid to push back against requests it deems too invasive or legally shaky.
And just when you thought things couldn’t get more interesting, San Francisco’s fire chief dropped a bombshell by saying they won’t be hosing down any flaming robotaxis during civil unrest unless they’re threatening a building. Talk about adding fuel to the fire!
