Waymo recently started two “road trips” to Philadelphia and New York City, showing interest in expanding into Northeastern cities. These trips involve sending a small fleet of human-driven vehicles equipped with Waymo’s autonomous driving system to map out the new city before testing the vehicles autonomously, albeit with a human behind the wheel. In some cases, these road trips have led to commercial launches, such as in Santa Monica in 2023.

For its Philadelphia trip, Waymo plans to place vehicles in the most complex parts of the city, including downtown and on freeways, to drive throughout various neighborhoods. In NYC, Waymo will drive its cars manually in parts of Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Jersey City, and Hoboken.

Despite applying for a permit to test autonomous vehicles in NYC, Waymo has not yet received approval due to current regulations requiring a human in the front seat. Nevertheless, Waymo continues testing in other cities like Atlanta, Austin, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. The company plans to launch services in Miami this year and Washington, D.C., in 2026.
