YouTube has introduced a new feature that allows select creators to remix songs using AI technology. Last year, the platform started letting creators in the U.S. generate AI-powered songs with prompts featuring vocals from artists like Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, and others.
Remixing Tracks with AI
Now, YouTube is expanding its Dream Track toolset to include a feature that enables creators to remix tracks by specifying how they want to change the style of the song. Creators in the test group can choose the “Restyle a track” option for a song and describe their vision, resulting in a 30-second snippet that can be used in Shorts.
Crediting Original Artists
The remixed snippets will be credited to the original song through the Short video itself and the Shorts audio pivot page. Each remix will be labeled appropriately to indicate that the track was modified using AI technology.
Collaboration with Universal Music Group
To address concerns from the music industry, YouTube announced plans to compensate artists and rights holders for the use of their work in AI features. The platform partnered with Universal Music Group (UMG) to develop a payment structure for rights holders.
YouTube’s Dream Track toolset, powered by the Lyria music generation model developed by DeepMind, aims to provide creators with innovative ways to remix tracks and create new music experiences. Other companies, like Hook developed by former JioSaavn executive Gaurav Sharma, are also working on similar initiatives for users to remix songs.
The ongoing development of AI-powered tools in the music industry showcases a new era of creativity and collaboration between technology and artistic expression.
