Google is set to bring YouTube Create to iOS devices, expanding its reach beyond Android after almost two years. Recent job listings suggest that Google is actively recruiting engineers in India to work on this new iOS development project.

Building the iOS Version

Creating Content on the Go

YouTube Create offers free mobile video editing tools tailored for content creators, featuring stickers, GIFs, and effects for both YouTube Shorts and longer videos. This app was developed by Google in consultation with 3,000 creators to ensure it met their requirements.

However, YouTube Create faces stiff competition from ByteDance’s CapCut editor. Exclusive Sensor Tower data shared with TechCrunch indicates that YouTube Create lags significantly behind CapCut and another major competitor, InShot.

User Engagement and Market Share

CapCut and InShot have been downloaded 66 million and 21 million times on Android devices in the second quarter of this year, respectively. In contrast, YouTube Create has only seen fewer than 500,000 downloads in the same period and a total of 4 million downloads since its launch.

CapCut leads with 194 million monthly active users on iOS in Q2, followed by InShot with 25 million. CapCut and Instagram’s Edit have dominated iOS downloads this quarter, with 28 million and 7 million downloads, respectively.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite facing tough competition, YouTube Create has shown positive momentum with a 28% year-over-year increase in monthly active users in Q2. This growth outpaces CapCut’s 9% rise and InShot’s 7% decline, according to Sensor Tower data.

While YouTube Create may have fewer users, it is building a more loyal user base. Rising active user numbers alongside declining downloads suggest that people are returning to the app regularly.

Geographical Expansion

YouTube Create’s user base is diversifying globally, with India being its largest market followed by Indonesia. The app is also experiencing significant growth in markets like Spain, South Korea, France, and Singapore.

An iOS release of YouTube Create could potentially boost its market share, but it will continue to face strong competition from other social media-backed video editing platforms and native video editors.

Future Prospects

With Google remaining tight-lipped about the project, the future of YouTube Create on iOS remains uncertain.

Despite the challenges, YouTube Create is making strides in the video editing space and could see further growth with its upcoming iOS release.
