Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Joins Frank McCourt’s TikTok Bid

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian joins bid to acquire TikTok as strategic adviser on social media

In a recent post on X, Alexis Ohanian announced his involvement in billionaire Frank McCourt’s bid to acquire TikTok, stating: “Looking to buy TikTok US. Bring it on chain. It is time.” If successful, Ohanian mentioned renaming the app to “TikTok: Freedom Edition.”

McCourt’s Project Liberty, an internet advocacy group, has formed a consortium called The People’s Bid to purchase TikTok’s U.S. assets. They aim to give users more control over their data. Other interested buyers include tech entrepreneur Jesse Tinsley, Microsoft, Oracle, Perplexity AI, and former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.

Despite a brief outage in mid-January, TikTok was restored after President Donald Trump promised to support the app. Following his executive order to extend the TikTok ban deadline by 75 days, the acquisition bids have intensified.

Update 03/03/2024: Alexis Ohanian’s comments on joining the bid have been included in the post.
