Google has announced that its Project Astra, an ambitious initiative to develop AI applications and “agents” for real-time, multimodal understanding, will not be launched until at least next year. During Google’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai shared that the company is focused on creating experiences where AI can perceive and interpret the world around us. Project Astra offers a glimpse into this future, with plans to deliver such experiences by 2025.
Project Astra Overview
Project Astra, showcased at Google’s I/O developer conference in May 2024, includes various technologies such as smartphone apps capable of recognizing surroundings and providing relevant information. Additionally, AI assistants within Project Astra can execute tasks on behalf of users. A demo during I/O displayed a prototype answering questions based on a smartphone’s camera view, like identifying locations or objects.
Consumer Agent Experience Delay
While reports suggested a consumer-focused agent experience launch by December, Google’s focus on Project Astra pushes the timeline beyond 2025. This delay indicates the complexity of developing AI agents, as seen with challenges faced by other companies like Anthropic in controlling applications and web browsers with generative AI models.
