Huawei in Hot Water Over Bribery Scandal in Europe

Huawei finds itself at the center of yet another scandal in Europe, with reports surfacing that lobbyists representing the Chinese tech giant have been caught bribing members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in order to win favor with lawmakers.

After facing a ban in the U.S. due to concerns that its telecommunications equipment could be compromised by the Chinese government, Huawei now appears to be under scrutiny in Europe as well. Several countries in the European Union are in the process of phasing out Huawei equipment, although the speed of this action has faced criticism.

Corruption Investigation Unveiled

A recent report by Follow the Money (FTM), an investigative news outlet based in the Netherlands, revealed that Belgian police conducted raids at 21 locations across Belgium and Portugal as part of an ongoing corruption probe. The raids targeted Huawei’s European offices and residences associated with lobbyists connected to the company.

Dubbed “Generation,” the FTM report disclosed that the investigation has been ongoing for over two years, focusing on allegations that Huawei lobbyists paid MEPs in exchange for their support in Parliament. The report indicates that around 15 current and former MEPs are under investigation, with suspicions of bribery, forgery, money laundering, and involvement in criminal organizations at the core of the probe.
