A Chinese-backed hacking group known as Salt Typhoon recently made headlines for infiltrating nine U.S. telecommunication and internet providers. But now, the FBI has confirmed that they have breached over 200 American companies! According to FBI assistant director Brett Leatherman, this cyber espionage campaign also targeted companies in 80 other countries, showing the massive global impact of Chinese cyber attacks.

Targeting Call Records

The hackers behind Salt Typhoon didn’t hold back when it came to their targets. They went after call records of top American politicians and officials, allowing them to track who was communicating with whom. This posed a serious threat, prompting the FBI to advise Americans to switch to encrypted messaging apps to protect their privacy.

Global Response

In response to this widespread hacking campaign, the FBI collaborated with nearly 20 international agencies to issue a joint advisory. In this advisory, they revealed that Salt Typhoon mainly focuses on infiltrating company routers and extracting sensitive network data. They also provided technical guidance on how to detect and prevent these intrusions.
