South Korean AI chip startup, FuriosaAI, recently announced a noteworthy partnership with LG AI Research. The collaboration aims to supply FuriosaAI’s AI chip, RNGD, to enterprises utilizing LG’s new EXAONE platform. This platform, EXAONE 4.0, is designed for running large language models (LLMs) and targets industries like electronics, finance, telecommunications, and biotechnology for various applications.
Rejected Acquisition Offer and New Partnership
About three months ago, FuriosaAI turned down an $800 million acquisition offer from Meta, choosing to remain independent. The decision was based on disagreements regarding post-acquisition business strategies and organizational structure, rather than price issues. This move by FuriosaAI reflects a broader strategy by Meta to reduce reliance on third-party suppliers like Nvidia.
Impactful Collaboration for AI Computing
With the failed acquisition deal, FuriosaAI is now focusing on expanding its business opportunities beyond South Korea through the partnership with LG AI Research. CEO June Paik expressed excitement about the company’s mission to make AI computing more sustainable and impactful.
LG AI’s Endorsement of FuriosaAI’s AI Chip
LG AI Research’s decision to adopt FuriosaAI’s AI chip is significant as it is a rare endorsement of a rival to Nvidia by a major enterprise. FuriosaAI’s hardware offers cost-effective solutions, delivering strong performance and lower total cost of ownership compared to competitive GPUs.
Efficiency and Performance
FuriosaAI’s RNGD accelerator excelled in performance, outperforming GPUs with LG AI Research’s EXAONE models by 2.25 times in inference performance. Additionally, LG found FuriosaAI’s hardware to be more energy-efficient, making it a preferred choice for AI computing tasks.
Specialized AI Chip for Enhanced Computing
Unlike general GPUs, FuriosaAI’s chip is exclusively built for AI computing, supporting a wide range of AI models efficiently. This specialized architecture is natively designed for AI tasks, offering enhanced performance without the need for rendering or mining functionalities.
Global Expansion and Team
FuriosaAI’s partnership with LG AI Research opens up business opportunities beyond South Korea, as LG’s global customer base can now benefit from the innovative AI chip solutions. Despite being a small startup with just 15 employees, FuriosaAI’s global reach and impact in the AI industry continue to grow.
