At the TechCrunch Disrupt event, GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra discussed the political implications of vehicle propulsion and the company’s approach to the future of electric and autonomous vehicles.
Cruise will still help GM transform the industry
Barra highlighted the importance of autonomy in transforming the automotive industry. GM’s acquisition of Cruise in 2016 allowed the AV startup to develop independently, leading to the commercialization of a driverless robotaxi. Despite some setbacks, Barra remains optimistic about the potential of autonomous vehicles to enhance safety and sees Cruise as a key player in GM’s future autonomous vehicle offerings.
GM will someday make a purpose-built AV
Following a safety incident, GM revised its plans for a purpose-built autonomous vehicle without traditional controls. Barra acknowledged the challenges posed by safety standards but remains committed to developing AV technology that prioritizes safety and innovation.
Keeping data secure
Barra emphasized the importance of data security in electric vehicles, highlighting the significant amount of data collected by modern vehicles. GM is investing in cybersecurity and privacy measures to protect sensitive information and ensure responsible data management practices.
Moving away from China
Barra discussed GM’s evolving strategy in China, citing challenges in competing with government-backed domestic brands. Despite financial losses in the region, GM is reassessing its approach to the Chinese market to ensure long-term sustainability amid intense competition and pricing pressures.
