Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has taken a stance in support of Elon Musk’s efforts to prevent OpenAI’s conversion from a nonprofit organization to a for-profit entity.

Meta’s Argument to California Attorney General

Meta has sent a letter to California attorney general Rob Bonta, emphasizing the potential “seismic implications for Silicon Valley” should OpenAI’s transition be allowed. The company urged Bonta to intervene directly, stating that Elon Musk and former OpenAI board member Shivon Zilis are well-equipped to represent the interests of Californians in this matter.

Concerns Raised by Meta

Meta highlighted the potential implications of OpenAI’s new business model, suggesting that non-profit investors could benefit from both for-profit returns and government tax incentives. This shift comes amidst Meta’s emergence as a major competitor in the AI market, with Musk previously co-founding OpenAI before pursuing his own AI endeavors through xAI.
